64-slice CT, CTA

Another example of Valley Radiologists’ commitment to staying at the forefront of health imaging technology is our addition of a 64-slice computed tomography system. With its dramatically improved images and fastest scan times in the industry, this innovative system allows us to diagnose a whole host of medical problems faster and more accurately than ever before. These include coronary artery disease, cancer, benign tumors, aneurysms, heart disease, lung disease, vascular disease, kidney problems, liver disease, musculoskeletal disorders and more. Unlike traditional CT systems, the 64-slice system is capable of showing various internal structures of the body with substantially greater anatomic detail. This can help our physicians make an accurate diagnosis and therefore eliminate the need for coronary angiography, exploratory surgery and surgical biopsy. We use 64-slice CT for a multitude of applications, including:

  • Neurologic Imaging
  • Musculoskeletal Imaging
  • CT Angiography (CTA)
  • Cardiac Imaging
  • Thoracic & Abdominal Imaging
  • Cerebral, Renal & Peripheral Angiography
  • Virtual Colongraphy
  • Lung Scans for Tumors & Pulmonary Nodules

Interventional Radiology

Today minimally invasive interventional techniques are reducing the risks, discomfort, scarring, hospital stays and recovery times associated with surgery. Guided by imaging modalities, small needles and catheters deliver treatment directly to target sites within the body.

At Valley Radiologists, our fellowship-trained, board-certified interventional radiologists treat more conditions than ever using today’s full spectrum of procedures. We also take a comprehensive clinical approach, consulting with patients, evaluating them, performing the procedure and handling all discharge, follow-up and patient management. Our large team of specialists offers 24/7 coverage and handles more interventional radiology than any other provider in Phoenix..

Comprehensive interventional radiology capabilities

Vascular Interventions

Complete clinical evaluation and state-of-the-art vascular diagnostics allow our interventional radiologists to perform a complete range of blood vessel (peripheral arterial, venous and neurovascular) interventions. These include diagnostic angiography, balloon angioplasty, endovascular stenting (including stenting of abdominal aortic aneurysm), atherectomy and thrombolytic therapies.

Neurovascular Interventions

At Valley Radiologists, our interventional radiologists are experienced with stenting of the carotid artery, which is fast becoming a key treatment for carotid occlusive disease.

Venous Interventions

Venous interventions are used to improve circulation. A small catheter heats the inside of the varicose vein. The vein shuts down and is absorbed by the body. Eventually, the circulation returns to the deep venous system. Ablation procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis in combination with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy.

CT Angiography

Because it is much less invasive than catheter angiography, CT angiography is sometimes preferred for the evaluation of pulmonary embolism, renal artery stenosis or occlusion, aneurysm, arterial dissection, arteriovenous malformation, atherosclerosis and blood clots in the legs and more. At Valley Radiologists, we’ve helped bring CT angiography, including coronary CT angiography, to the Valley, and we remain at the forefront of this technology.

Dialysis Access Procedures

Hemodialysis is the mainstay of therapy for people with end-stage renal disease. Maintaining patency of the arterial-to-venous graft or fistula is crucial for the patient’s survival. Using techniques of thrombolysis, balloon angioplasty and stenting, Valley Radiologists can help improve long-term patency. We commonly insert dialysis catheters using imaging guidance to ensure optimal placement.

Image-guided Percutaneous Biopsy

At Valley Radiologists, we perform all types of biopsies. By using imaging modalities to guide the biopsy needle to the target, we’re able to obtain optimal samples from ideal targets with the utmost precision.

Drainage & Aspiration

There are a large number of reasons that needle aspiration or catheter drainage may be needed. With image guidance, our interventional radiologists can approach the target site with maximum precision, thereby achieving optimal results.

Vertebral Compression Fractures

To alleviate the pain of spinal compression fractures and prevent their progression, Valley Radiologists inject acrylic bone cement into the fractured vertebral body in a procedure called vertebroplasty. For more severe compression fractures, our experts use kyphoplasty, in which a balloon is inflated within the fractured vertebra to create a space. That space is then filled with cement, which restores vertebral height, stabilizes the fracture and alleviates pain.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

With uterine fibroid embolization, imaging techniques are used to precisely place a catheter into the arteries that supply uterine fibroids. Small particles are injected that block the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to decrease in size and thereby alleviating symptoms in most patients. Several of Valley Radiologists’ interventionalists are fellowship-trained specifically in the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Pain Management/Spine Interventions

At Valley Radiologists, we perform a number of diagnostic and therapeutic treatments for chronic pain and spine-related conditions, including discography, facet joint injection, epidural steroid injection, nerve root injection and sacroiliac joint injection.

Interventional Oncology

In the fight against cancer, interventional radiologists have added to medicine’s arsenal of effective therapies, creating a subset of cancer care known as interventional oncology. We help fight cancer with such procedures as biopsy, chemoinfusion, chemoembolization, thermal ablation of tumors, venous-access procedures and others.

Your Partner in Patient Management

At Valley Radiologists, interventional radiology is an important part of our reputation for and tradition of medical excellence. Our specialists are fellowship-trained and board-certified in interventional radiology, and they’ve played a major role in advancing interventional medicine in and around Phoenix, AZ. We continue to be the busiest interventional radiology team, and we are committed to providing the highest standards of care.

Women’s Imaging

Women’s Imaging

Valley Radiologists has been at the forefront of women’s imaging for decades, particularly the detection, diagnosis and staging of breast diseases. We combine focus with comprehensive state-of-the-art digital capabilities to provide the highest standard of care, from screening and diagnosis to biopsy. Using the most advanced equipment and specialists who perform women’s imaging exclusively, we’ve streamlined the process while offering unsurpassed diagnostic excellence. All with the compassion women appreciate and the accuracy on which their physicians rely.

Because appropriate, effective medical care depends on an accurate and complete diagnosis, the physicians at Valley Radiologists offer a complete range of imaging modalities and specialized studies for the special needs of women, including:

Digital Mammography

Valley Radiologists now offers state of the art digital mammography at all of our mammography locations. Digital mammography allows our radiologists to interpret higher-resolution images and have the ability to zoom in and out and manipulate contrast, creating better views and leading to a complete accurate diagnosis. Additionally, digital mammography provides images more quickly while reducing patients’ radiation exposure. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the second-most deadly. In the fight against this disease, mammography is a vital tool that allows our radiologists to detect breast cancer or other abnormalities in the earliest stages. Annual screening mammograms are recommended to begin at age 40 and are credited with helping reduce the mortality of breast cancer by as much as 40 percent. However, specific breast complaints, family history, or other risk factors may indicate the need to be screened at a younger age or with greater frequency.

Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) for Mammography

Valley Radiologists is proud to offer the state-of-the-art R2 CAD system. CAD is an exciting advancement in breast imaging that gives our Women’s Imaging radiologists a computerized “second review” of mammograms. The computer-aided detection system is especially useful for identifying areas of increased density, tissue asymmetry and suspicious microcalcifications. CAD effectively functions as a “second pair of eyes” and has been shown in studies to improve detection of breast cancer by as much as 20%.

Breast Ultrasound

High-resolution breast ultrasound may be used with mammography. Ultrasound is directed to areas of mammographic abnormality or symptomatic areas of the breast. Ultrasound is also used to differentiate cysts from solid masses and to guide breast biopsies.

Breast MRI

High-resolution breast MRI is a powerful imaging modality that may be used with mammography. Breast MRI is predominantly reserved for high-risk patients, such as those with breast cancer or a known breast cancer gene, or to provide doctors with more information. With breast MRI, cancerous tissue shows greater blood flow than surrounding normal breast tissue. Cancer that is obscured by dense breast tissue on a mammogram may appear more obvious on MRI. Additionally, breast MRI is considered the “gold standard” for evaluation of breast implant rupture.

Bone Densitometry (DXA scan)

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry quickly, painlessly and accurately measures the strength, density and mineral content of bone. DXA is the standard method for identifying patients with or at risk for osteoporosis and related fractures. Patients at risk for osteoporosis because of age, medication or previous fractures should obtain a DXA scan to determine the need for treatment to prevent further bone loss. DXA is also the method of choice for monitoring treatment and disease progression.

Breast Biopsy Procedures

If imaging studies appear suspicious, a biopsy may be conducted to obtain a tissue sample to determine if cancer is present or not. With the area’s most complete, full-service interventional radiology team, Valley Radiologists is equipped to perform a complete array of minimally invasive breast biopsy procedures, including ultrasound-guided core biopsy or aspiration, vacuum-assisted sterotactic breast biopsy and MRI-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy.

Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy or Aspiration

Ultrasound is used to guide a core needle to obtain cells from a solid lesion or a cyst. Breast imaging specialists watch in real time during the procedure, which requires only local anesthesia and no radiation.

Vacuum-Assisted Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Mammographic digital images are used to guide the core needle to obtain cells precisely from calcifications or lesions that are seen on mammograms but not on ultrasound. The procedure requires local anesthesia and only low-dose radiation.

MRI-Guided Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy

For abnormalities detected with MRI but not with mammography or ultrasound, MRI-guided core vacuum-assisted needle biopsy is used to obtain a sample from the lesion. The procedure requires only local anesthesia and no radiation.

Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology is an imaging subspecialty focused on diagnosing conditions in the brain, spine and soft tissues of the neck. With today’s powerful and versatile imaging modalities, radiologists are now better able to help neurologists and neurosurgeons diagnose a broad spectrum of conditions, everything from nerve-root compression in the spine to vascular occlusion in the brain. Often, accurate interpretation of these test results can spot potentially disastrous problems early, allowing for the most effective medical intervention.

At Valley Radiologists, our board-certified and subspecialized neuroradiologists work closely with physicians to select the exams that will provide the most useful images and the most thorough and accurate diagnoses. Comprehensive capabilities provide real hope for neurologic conditions.

MRI, CT and PET are fast becoming routine methods of evaluating and diagnosing neurologic disease. With their unique methods of acquiring images, each modality provides its own advantages in the assessment and diagnosis of various neurologic disorders.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides outstanding detailed images that make it possible to map parts of the brain that are responsible for essential functions and to identify small anatomical changes. MRI helps our neuroradiologists distinguish normal tissue from diseased tissue, determine the extent (and age) of brain condition and assess the potential risk of neurosurgical intervention. MRI helps us plan treatment, evaluating the effect of therapies and help predict the course of disease.

Because appropriate, effective medical care depends on an accurate and complete diagnosis, the physicians at Valley Radiologists offer a complete range of imaging modalities and specialized studies for the special needs of women, including:

Computed Tomography (CT)

With its ability to very precisely image internal body structures, computed tomography (CT) is an essential diagnostic tool for neurologic conditions. It is increasingly used to help physicians identify and locate traumatic brain injury, blood clots, bleeding involved in stroke, ruptured aneurysms and enlarged ventricles in patients with hydrocephalus. CT is invaluable for assessing bone and soft-tissue damage resulting from facial trauma and for detecting spinal injury. In addition, CT is well-suited for evaluating the paranasal sinuses and soft tissues of the neck.

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT)

Positron emission tomography helps our neuroradiologists diagnose memory disorders, brain tumors and seizures. PET is especially adept at differentiating primary neurodegenerative dementias from other causes of cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease. With PET/CT, we’re able to combine PET’s metabolic data with CT’s precise anatomic detail for a highly useful image that helps us locate metabolic abnormalities within their true anatomic context.

CT, MRI & PET for Head & Neck Tumors

CT, MRI and PET are very useful in identifying the presence of tumors in the head and neck. CT with intravenous contrast agent can provide accurate information regarding tumors and additional pathology in the neck. MRI is particularly useful in evaluating the skull base, eye sockets and salivary glands. MRI may be used when CT is contraindicated because of contrast dye allergy or an elevated creatine level from renal failure. By improving the sensitivity and specificity of localization and staging of head and neck tumors, PET serves as an outstanding complementary tool to both CT and MRI. In addition, PET’s metabolic information can significantly increase the accuracy of diagnosing the recurrence of head and neck cancer.

MR Angiography (MRA)

MR angiography (MRA) is an excellent noninvasive imaging approach for the blood vessels in the head and neck. Conditions that once would have required catheter angiography for diagnosis, such as aneurysms, vascular malformations and tumors of the brain, spine, head and neck, can now be diagnosed using noninvasive MRA. MRA provides an accurate and noninvasive evaluation without the cost and risk of conventional angiography. MRA can be combined with conventional brain MR and CT imaging to evaluate stroke and major vascular disease. Additionally, MRA provides additional anatomic information not evaluated with conventional angiography. With MRA, contrast agents can be entirely avoided in certain situations, eliminating the risk of allergic or adverse reaction.

Musculoskeletal

While musculoskeletal imaging isn’t new, today’s powerful, versatile technologies have provided a new level of sophistication and accuracy in the diagnosis of problems related to muscles, bones, joints and supporting soft tissue. This sophistication and the complexities involved make subspecialty expertise a vital part of an accurate and complete diagnosis.

At Valley Radiologists, we combine comprehensive capabilities and modalities with musculoskeletal imaging subspecialty training, know-how and skill. As a result, Valley Radiologists offer the complete range of musculoskeletal radiology exams, use the most advanced techniques and have the training and focused experience to deliver the consistently reliable diagnoses on which you depend.

Comprehensive Capabilities in Sports & Musculoskeletal Radiology

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

In sports and musculoskeletal applications, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is most often used to evaluate trauma, sports-related injuries, inflammatory conditions and degenerative disorders. In addition to its usefulness for imaging the knee, shoulder and spine, MRI is beneficial for evaluating the hips and small joints, such as the hand, wrist, elbow and ankle. Other uses include the assessment of ligament and tendon injuries, stress fractures, avulsion injuries, tumors and systemic diseases. Using a contrast agent to enhance images, MR arthrography helps us evaluate unexplained joint pain and postoperative knee and shoulder problems or as a follow-up to other imaging studies. MR arthrography aids in the evaluation of the ligaments of the wrist and is especially helpful for evaluating labral injuries of the hip and shoulder joints.

Computed Tomography (CT)

Multidetector CT (MDCT) is especially effective for examining the skeletal system. It provides extremely detailed high-resolution cross-sectional images of most internal structures. MDCT enables us to examine fractures in bones that are hidden from view using simple radiography and to evaluate some soft-tissue abnormalities related to musculoskeletal complaints. Subtle fractures, particularly in small joints like the wrist, are more visible with MDCT and 3-D rendering. It creates an extremely high-resolution three-dimensional visualization of the bone surface and internal structures. Volume-rendered images provide 3-D visualization of complex fractures, including the complex spatial relationships between bone fragments. The resulting images can be cropped and rotated to show anatomy, which is sometimes not even possible during surgical intervention.

MDCT also benefits postoperative imaging in patients with orthopedic hardware. It makes it possible to see the 3-D relationships between internal hardware, joint surfaces, bones and bone fragments. To evaluate internal joint structure, CT arthrography is ideal for patients who are unable to undergo MRI.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an important part of the diagnostic toolkit for musculoskeletal disorders. Because it provides results in “real time,” ultrasound allows our musculoskeletal specialists to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues dynamically. This means we can assess the structures as a system while they are being used or while the body is moving. With ultrasound, we can evaluate infection, inflammatory processes, soft-tissue masses and tendon tears, particularly in the ankles, fingers, knees and elbows. Ultrasound is also excellent for examining the soft tissue and fluids that surround the joints.

Bone Mineral Density Testing (DXA)

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry quickly, painlessly and accurately measures the strength, density and mineral content of bone. DXA is the standard method for identifying patients with or at risk for osteoporosis and related fractures. Patients at risk for osteoporosis because of age, medication or previous fractures should obtain a DXA scan to determine the need for treatment to prevent further bone loss. DXA is also the method of choice for monitoring treatment and disease progression.

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT)

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is used to identify certain medical problems early, when treatment can be most effective. PET/CT scanning can identify fractures, tumors and diseases of the skeletal system. Its greatest strengths include providing early information about injury sites and evaluating large areas, even the entire body, in a single exam. This is particularly well-suited for patients at risk for cancer that spreads to the bone or to monitor therapy for bone cancer.
