    Water Prep
    No food or drink other than water 2 hours prior to your exam. Drink 16oz of water 30-minutes prior to check-in.
    Flavored water and carbonated water are not allowed.
    You may use the restroom. Please bring your order, insurance cards, and Photo ID to the appointment.
  • CT WITH IV CONTRAST OR WITH AND WITHOUT IV CONTRAST
    CT Brain, Neck, Chest, Extremities and CTAs
    Be well hydrated
    Nothing to eat or drink except for water 2 hours prior
    Drink plenty of water up to the time of your appointment
    Patients are allowed to use the restroom
    Arrive 15 minutes prior to your exam time
  • CT UROGRAM
    Drink 12oz of water night before exam.
    Nothing to eat or drink for two hours priors to exam (except water).
    Day of exam drink 8oz water every hour until your appointment.
    Patients are allowed to us the restroom.
    Arrive 15 minutes prior to your exam time.
  • CTA CORONARY
    Be well hydrated
    No food or caffeine 4 hours prior to exam.
    Drink plenty of water up to the time of your appointment.
    May take usual medications.
    Arrive 30 minutes prior to exam time.
  • CT ENTEROGRAPHY
    Patients need to arrive 30 minutes prior to appointment time and will be given 3 bottles of oral contrast at check in.
    No food or drink other than water for 4 hours prior to exam.
    Patients are allowed to have water up to one hour prior to exam time.
  • BOWEL CLEANSING PREPARATION FOR VIRTUAL COLONSCOPY
    The exam requested by your physician requires that your bowel be cleansed and clear of stool.
    It is important that you follow and complete all directions carefully. Take only the medications, food and fluids in the amount specified and at the times shown, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Following these instructions will provide the best results and avoid having to repeat the procedure. Individual responses to laxatives vary so remain close to the restroom facilities once you have starts the bowel cleansing procedure.

    ALL ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT WALGREENS OR CVS. (Note: Items may be purchased elsewhere, but not all stores have all the items needed.)

    ITEMS NEEDED:
    (1) 10 ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate Laxative Oral Solution (2.00-$3.00)
    (4) Laxative Tablets (bisacodyl USP 5mg) i.e. Dulcolax ($4.00-$5.000
    (1) Laxative Suppository (bisacodyl USP 10mg) ($4.00-$9.00)

    We will supply you with Tagitol V.

    TWO DAYS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
    Eat a low residue diet, choose your foods from the list attached to this sheet.

    One day before your Virtual Colonoscopy (NOTE - Be sure to drink ALL water/fluids as instructed)
    Clear liquids food include - Apple sauce, chicken broth, Jell-o

    Breakfast:One bottle Tagitol V, Clear liquid diet foods
    Lunch:One bottle Tagitol V, Clear liquid diet foods, water or lemon water
    Afternoon (anytime): Clear liquid diet foods
    1:00 pm - 8 oz glass of water

    5:30pm - 10 ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate Laxative Oral Solution

    7:30pm - (4) Laxative Tablets (bisacodyl USP 5mg) i.e. Dulcolax
    7:00pm - 8 oz glass of water
    8:00pm - 8 oz glass of water
    After 9:00 - Nothing to eat or drink

    THE DAY OF YOUR VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY
    Upon rising, do not eat or drink anything

  • NUCLEAR MEDICINE EXAMS


  • BONE SCAN
    • No food restrictions. Hydrate.
  • DATSCAN
    • Please contact Valley Radiologists for prep. Medications will need to be reviewed.
  • GASTRIC EMPTYING
    • Nothing to eat or drink (including water) 8 hours prior to exam.
    • Notify Valley Radiologists if you have an egg allergy.
    • No sedatives 12 hours prior to exam.
  • HEPATOBILIARY (HIDA) SCAN
    • Nothing to eat 4 hours prior to exam. Water is allowed.
    • No Fentanyl patch within 12 hours.
    • No Narcotic medication within 24 hours.
    • No exams with oral barium day of the exam.
    • Must have prior abdominal ultrasound within the last 90 days.
  • I-131 THERAPY & WHOLE BODY SCANS
    • Please contact Valley Radiologists for prep.
  • MUGA
    • No food restrictions. Hydrate.
  • PARATHYROID SCAN
    • No food restrictions. Hydrate.
    • Notify Valley Radiologists if you are diabetic.
  • RENAL SCAN - MAG3
    • No food restrictions. Hydrate.
  • THYROID UPTAKE & SCAN
    • Nothing to eat 4 hours prior to exam. Water is allowed.
    • Low iodine diet for 3 days prior to dosing.
    • No CT/IVP contrast exams within 1 month.
    • Must be off thyroid medications. Consult with Valley Radiologists.
  • PET/CT EXAMS


  • FDG ONCOLOGY
    • Maintain a high protein, low carbohydrate/sugar diet the day prior to your exam
    • Nothing to eat 6 hours prior to your exam. This includes gum, candy, cough syrups/drops
    • Encouraged to drink plain water the day of your exam. DO NOT drink flavored water, coffee, tea, soda or dietary supplement drinks
    • Avoid strenuous exercise/activities for 24 hours prior to your exam. No running/walking on the morning of your exam
    • Wear comfortable clothing, preferably without a lot of metal buttons/snaps/zippers
    • Plan to be here 2-3 hours
    • Arrive on time. The FDG dose is ordered specifically for you and may not be usable if you are late
    • You may take your usual medications with water only on the day of the exam (UNLESS you are diabetic)
    • Contact us if you are: Diabetic, Claustrophobic, and/or Pregnant/Breast feeding for special instructions
  • SODIUM FLUORIDE BONE SCAN
    • No preparation required. You may continue to eat and drink normally prior to and after the scan.
    • We would encourage you to drink a couple of glasses of water one hour prior to your exam.
    • If you are on any medications, you may continue to take them.
  • ULTRASOUND


  • ABDOMEN ULTRASOUND (GALL BLADDER, LIVER, PANCREAS, AORTA, UPPER QUADRANT)
    Nothing to eat or drink after midnight or 6 hours prior to appointment.
    Children 5 years and younger: nothing by mouth 4 hours prior to exam.
  • ABDOMEN/PELVIS ULTRASOUND COMBOS: FEMALES
    If the exam is scheduled BEFORE NOON: Nothing by mouth after midnight the day before the exam.
    If the exam is scheduled AFTER NOON: Nothing by mouth 6 hours prior to the exam.
    Patient must drink 48 oz water 1 ½ hours prior to the exam and finish in the 1st half hour and DO NOT URINATE.
  • ABDOMEN/PELVIS ULTRASOUND COMBOS: MALES
    If the exam is scheduled BEFORE NOON: Nothing by mouth after midnight the day before the exam
    If the exam is scheduled AFTER NOON: Nothing by mouth 6 hours prior to the exam.
    Patient must drink 24 oz water 1 ½ hours prior to the exam and finish in the 1st half hour and DO NOT URINATE.
  • BLADDER ULTRASOUND
    Drink 32 oz water 1 ½ hours prior to exam-finish in 1st half hour, you may eat but DO NOT URINATE.
  • OB AND OB TWINS ULTRASOUND
    1ST TRIMESTER:
    Start drinking 32 oz of water 1 1/2 hours prior to exam, finish within the first 1/2 hour.
    You may eat, DO NOT URINATE.

    2ND and 3RD TRIMESTER:
    Start drinking 16 oz of water 1 1/2 hours prior to exam, finish within the first 1/2 hour.
    You may eat, DO NOT URINATE.
  • PELVIC OR PELVIC ULTRASOUND WITH PROBE
    1 1/2 hours before exam time drink 48 oz of water during the first half hour. You may eat but DO NOT URINATE.
  • PYLORIC STENOSIS ULTRASOUND, INFANTS ONLY (STOMACH/ABDOMEN)
    Nothing by mouth 1 hour prior to the exam. Bring your own baby bottle for the test.
  • RENAL AND BLADDER ULTRASOUND
    Start drinking 32 oz water 1 ½ hours prior to your appointment, finish in 1st half hour. You may eat but DO NOT URINATE.
  • RENAL ARTERY DOPPLER
    If the exam is scheduled BEFORE NOON: Nothing by mouth after midnight.
    If the exam is scheduled AFTER NOON: Nothing by mouth 6 hours prior to exam.
  • RENAL ULTRASOUND
    Drink 16 oz of water ½ hour prior to exam, you may eat but DO NOT URINATE if possible.
    Children 12 years old and under: No prep.
  • TIPS ULTRASOUND (TRANSJUGULAR INTRAHEPATIC PORTOSYSTEMIC SHUNT)
    Nothing by mouth after midnight.
  • GENERAL EXAMS


  • MAMMOGRAMS
    No perfumes, powders, deodorants or lotions on or around the breast and underarm area.
    Transdermal patches for nicotine,pain or hormone therapy worn in the chest area may need to be removed (schedule accordingly).
    Wearing a two piece outfit is suggested.
  • DEXA / PEDIATRIC DEXA
    The patient must not have any nuclear scans, barium exams or oral contrast used for Abdomen/Pelvis CT scans one week prior to the exam.
  • BARIUM ENEMA, BARIUM ENEMA WITH AIR, AND BARIUM ENEMA WITH COLOSTOMY
    48 HOUR PREP
    Items Needed:
    (1) 10 ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate Laxative Oral Solution ($2.00-$3.00)

    10:00am Drink one (1) 10 ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate Laxative Oral Solution.
    11:00am Drink 8oz glass of clear liquid or juice
    12:00pm Light liquid meal
    2:00pm Take four (4) laxative tablets with one (1) full 8 fl oz glass of water. DO NOT CHEW TABLETS
    3:00pm Drink 8oz glass of clear liquid or juice
    4:00pm Drink 8oz glass of clear liquid or juice
    6:00pm Light liquid meal
    May have only clear liquids until midnight.

    About the diet:
    The prescribed diet does not allow you to consume foods that will leave solid residue matter in your bowel. The ONLY foods that you may consume will be clear liquids and low residue as follows: clear fruit juices and soda pop, black coffee or tea, plain gelatin, popsicles, and the following soups: consommé, bouillon, and onion soup. Foods that you cannot eat include vegetable, fruits, or fruit nectars, nuts, fats, butter, milk, or any milk product, fried foods, beef,pork, lamb, fowl, whole grain cereals, bread or crackers. Hard candy and cough drops are allowed.

    **No red or dark colored foods. NO DAIRY PRODUCTS**

    In preparing yourself for the examination, you are instructed to drink a specific number of 8oz glasses of clear water.YOU MUST DRINK AT LEAST THE NUMBER OF GLASSES IN THE TIME PERIOD COVERED BY THE SCHEDULE YOU FOLLOW TO BE SURE YOUR BODY DOES NOT DEHYDRATE.This fluid also plays an important role in cleansing and flushing out your system. The liquids you drink may be citrus fruit juices (canned) and other juices such as apple, cranberry, grape, Gatorade and similar drinks, tea or coffee (black) or water. The number of glasses of liquid specified is in addition to all the other fluids you take.YOU MAY DRINK MORE THAN THE SPECIFIED AMOUNT, BUT NOT LESS.Insert suppository into rectum 2 hours prior to the exam. When the x-ray is complete you may return to your normal diet.

  • IVP OR IVP WITH ANTEGRADE
    24 HOUR PREP
    Tell us of any iodine allergy and/or if you are diabetic and on Glucophage, Glucovance, Avandamet, Metformin or Metaglip,Janument & Glumetza.

  • SMALL BOWEL
    Nothing by mouth after midnight. Exam could last up to 4 hours. Please bring reading material.
  • VCUG
    Tell us of any iodine allergy. All patients being currently treated for new UTI must be finished with their antibiotics and must have a urinalysis done through their doctor prior to having VCUG. This is done to make sure that no bacteria is pushed up into the kidneys during the procedure. Preventative antibiotics without a UTI is okay.
