Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive material (radiopharmaceuticals) to evaluate molecular activity within the body to help diagnose or treat a variety of diseases. Not only can nuclear scans help doctors diagnose many conditions, including cancers, injuries and infections, they can also show how organs, like your heart and lungs, are working. The radioactive material enters your body by being injected, ingested or inhaled. The radiopharmaceuticals are detected by special types of cameras that provide very precise pictures of the area of the body being imaged. These detailed pictures allow physicians to see how the body is functioning and to measure its chemical and biological processes. This can be used to help diagnose many types of diseases and disorders at an early stage, as well as offer a unique insight into the human body that enable physicians to personalize patient care.
